Tania (27)

Early marriage and dealing with drug addiction of spouse

Tania is onlythe daughter of her parents. She was married to the person who she had affair. He was electrician by profession. She got married at a very early age. Soon after her marriage, Tania found that her husband was drug addicted. Whatever he earned was consumed for drug. Tania has two children (one died while she was abroad, survived children's age 6 years)from her marriage. But she facedfinancial difficulties as her husband stopped contributing any money for family. Tania took a job in a local factory and earned about 6,000 BDT. Her maternal uncle and cousin who were already migrant workers and knowing Tania's situa¬tion, they influenced and convinced her to take up job abroad. She paid her migration cost (30,000 BDT) from her savings and took money from money lender on interest. Her mother in law also insisted her to migrate. She processed her documents with the dream to earn and buy a land and build her own house to secure their life. She left her children with her mother in law and started for Saudi Arabia as Tania could not rely on her drug addicted husband who always wants to re-marry with the desire to get a good amount of dowry from the second marriage.

Loss of child while abroad
Tania started working in a 10 member house in Saudi Arabia where her employer was caring. She did not receive any copy of her contract prior to her departure. She was supposed to get 1000 SR but the employer gave her 800 SR. Sometimes she was overworked. She lost one son who was sick in Bangladesh. Tania cannot say what exactly happened to her son. After hearing about the loss of her son she wanted to return home but her employer told her that she would not get to see her son on return. Perhaps this is the only regret she has during her stay abroad. "Son's death changed my entire life" — said Tania.Tania tried to focus on work as she knew returning home would not solve her financial problem.

Return and re-migration
Her daughter had an accident in Bangladesh. Tania returned to hear this news. The employer also gave her 2000 SR, a mobile set, toiletries and candy as gift. She was separated from her husband. She lives in her maternal home.

Tania is trying to re-migrate to Jordan. She is planning to leave her daughter with her mother- in law. One of her cousins is helping her with the visa. Tania is not spending any money to migrate this time. She said that her cousin told that the employer would pay. She thinks the training at TTC certainly helps specially with the language skills.
