Our work continues to shape the lives of many women, who battle against the odds in foreign lands by offering both pre and post departure support and training.
Bangladeshi Ovhibashi Mohila Sramik Association (BOMSA) aims to unite and protect the welfare of female migrants of Bangladesh. Founded and operated by returned women migrant workers, BOMSA has been working with internal and external women migrants since 1998 to ensure the protection of migrant’s rights. At that time it was the only voice for female migrants in Bangladesh. BOMSA has been registered with Department of Women’s affairs Government of Bangladesh DWA Registration no. Jesbikka/Dhaka/250, NGO Bureau Reg. No 1920. BOMSA is operational in eleven districts. Our work continues to shape the lives of many women, who battle against the odds in foreign lands by offering both pre and post departure support and training.
It was not easy for BOMSA to start a new organization when the organizers, who are returnee women migrants, had almost no experience to run an association. Mobilizing women migrants was not an easy task.
Bangladeshi Ovibashi Mohila Sramik Association (BOMSA) started to work for the migrant women with the aim to unite and protect the welfare of the migrant women workers of Bangladesh. BOMSA was founded by Bangladeshi returnee migrant women mainly from Philippines, Malaysia, and other countries in 1998. All of these women experienced various problems throughout their migration process i.e. starting from search for jobs and living abroad. These conditions inspired and motivated this group of women to form an organization that will give them a platform to work for and the migrant women workers of Bangladesh so that they do not suffer as they did.
It was not easy for BOMSA to start a new organization when the organizers, who are returnee women migrants, had almost no experience to run an association. Mobilizing women migrants was not an easy task. The founding members with strong determination, started to work with the protection issues of women migrants in 1998, and today have successfully given a shape to BOMSA with diversified activities. The organization started its operation in a small location in Tongi District (Ershad Nagar) and Rupganj District back in 1998 and has a wide coverage in a number of districts of Bangladesh today.
